Prague in 19th century paintings

Prague in the long 19th century (1784-1918) underwent one of the greatest transformations in its history. It transformed from a quiet provincial town, the head of the mere Czech Kingdom of the Austrian state, into a vibrant national, political and industrial metropolis of Bohemia. However, even then it attracted the attention of many visitors who appreciated the views of the city from various points of its rugged terrain, a walk through its winding streets, the architecture of preserved Prague monuments and individual houses, and most likely the overall atmosphere of the historical city.

At that time, Prague was documented and captured in their works not only by many contemporary graphic artists and later also by photographers, but throughout the century a number of paintings by Czech artists, but also by foreigners, were created. Many of them now form the collection of the Museum of Prague, some can also be found in other institutions. The subject matter was most often some city panoramas, sometimes traditional monuments and their urban complexes, and individual Prague houses also attracted the attention of artists. Often the main subject is the depiction of the atmosphere of the city, genre pictures from its streets. Thanks to these artists, we have also preserved evidence of some Prague buildings that no longer exist or the past appearance of current buildings.
